Apple Software Update /Still/ Wants to Install /New/ Software
Posted by Ryan on July 31st, 2008.
So a few months ago, people noticed that Apple’s Software Update program was prompting people to install Safari, Apple’s browser, on their computer. There was just one problem with this: the people did not have Safari installed. Apple, through their update program, was installing new software. Now, it may just be me, but isn’t the point of something with “Software Update” in its name supposed to like… I don’t know, update software that is already installed?
At least now, Apple has changed it so that it shows in a section called New Software, but still, why is it showing? If I wanted to install Safari, I would download it myself and install it. I will note that I did have it installed at one time, but removed it, since I don’t need a fourth browser installed (Opera, Firefox, and Internet Exploader are already installed, with Opera being my main browser).
I’m sorry, but a program with update in its name should only be asking me if I want to update software that is already installed. And here’s another thing: if you take a look, you will see that Safari is prechecked (you’ll have to take my word that I didn’t check it, and I didn’t). This means that if you don’t uncheck it, it will be installed. I wonder how many times Safari has been installed because people were in a rush and didn’t notice that it was prechecked, if they even noticed it at all.
