So the tech department here at Quinnipiac made a few changes during the summer, two of which I don’t agree with.
The first would be wireless in the dorms. Dorms are not the best place to rely on wireless. It wouldn’t be bad if there were enough wired ports for everyone, but no, there’s only one per room.
The second thing is this antivirus they put on the server that all our traffic goes through. What this means is that I can’t infect a virtual machine like last year when I was helping in the GeekU program at geekstogo.com. I also can’t get some files which I want, ones that I know are good. Instead of spending the money for the AV, it could have been put to better us…computer saftey classes (as in viruses, malware, social engineering awareness type things) that would protect users at their homes and other locations for when they are not at school.
And back to the wireless…a few days ago a university wide email was sent out saying that they would be working on the wireless system, and turning if of at 0100 Friday to do so. Well, 0020 rolled around, and magically, my wireless shutdown…wasn’t just a AIM or mIRC that lost connection like sometimes happens. Windows lost the connection, and couldn’t find it again. To make matters worse, I was helping someone on IRC at the time. So I had to hurry down to the library and get back on asap.
That’s all I wanted to rant about. Enjoy your day

About three years ago, I stopped using Yahoo!’s chat rooms. The discussion in them weren’t on topic, and it was making me mad. So I left.
Last night I wanted to go into some of the teen rooms to see if I could see a police sting. Hey, what did you expect, I’m Criminal Justice major, soon to be CJ/Computer Science major (I hope). So I download Yahoo Instant Messenger, install it, go to join a teen room, and find out that Yahoo! got rid of them.
So I look in the list, and try one of the rooms in the Crime category, thinking that there may be a cop or two in there that I could chat with. Long story short, no, there weren’t any cops. So I figure that it’s because its midnight, and sign off, thinking that I’ll just try again tomorrow.
So I logged on about an hour ago…so far, this is what’s gone on in the room (joinings and parting removed.
You are in “Crime Scene:1″ ( a place to talk about crimes, investigations, and justice. [Notification: We are currently recording IP addresses of all Yahoo! Chat users.] )

Facebook has recently announced the Facebook Development Platform (their blog entry can be viewed at http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=2207512130 )
Several People are now posting notes similar to the one below:
Facebook has begun selling user information (surprise, surprise!). They call it the “Facebook Development Platform.” To restrict use of your information, do the following:
Click “My Privacy” on the left.
Click “Edit Settings” under the “Everyone” section.
Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck “My information may be used according to the restricted Terms of Service.”
(Do your friends a favor and repost this as your own note.)
Facebook is NOT selling information. It is simply creating a new, safe, and easy way for people to use facebook. All the user information will be remaining safe and secure on Facebook’s servers.
So what is the thought behind this? Developers and facebook users themselves will be able to develop software and websites that require facebook users to sign in before having access to somethings. For example, the guy’s whose girlfriend would have a threesome if he was able to make a group that reached 100,000 members used this new feature to create a page on his website where facebook members (and only facebook members) could vote on who the other girl would be.
What can this platform lead to? Well, if someone had the time and the knowledge (and felt like doing it), they could make a desktop facebook client. That way, you could always have information about your friends on your computer, and could have it connect to facebook’s servers when you wanted to update it.
I just spent about 30 minutes setting up a developers account and a few pages so I could see how this was set up. If you go to http://www.rpmurphy.com/misc/sample.php , you can log in and see a page when you have signed in. On that page will be additional information regarding this post and the Facebook Development Platform.

So a lot has been going on since the last update. School started, the website got a new design (kinda), yadda yadda yadda.
Classes are going fine, with the exception of International Business. Its boring and its at 9AM. Bleh.
My Criminal Justice (my major) classes are fun. My Crime and Society prof is a former Assistant State’s Attorney. She left when she had kids, and she’s going back to the job soon. My Police and Policing prof recently retired after ~28 years on the Hamden police force.
I was finally able to get up on the mountain this past weekend; first time since move-in. I hate my left ankle, it will randomly hurt, and then stop hurting within an hour. Or at least that’s how it is normally. But no, not this recent time, this time it lasted about a week.
This weekend is the last Ordeal, and second to last OA camping event for the year. Only four members have registered so far…that stinks, a lot of members are going to show up at the door…later this month, at an Executive Committee Meeting (which I’m not going to be at, luckily), I imagine the cook will complain about how its hard to buy food when nobody pre-registers.
Also in OA news, we need about 40 more members to convert to brotherhood, or we won’t have the 30% conversion rate we need for Quality Lodge. And guess who the Brotherhood chairman is? Yeah, me. We better get a lot of people doing brotherhood this weekend, which is why I’m going to the Chapter meeting tomorrow, and my Troop meeting on Wednesday. I’m not going to end my youth leadership career to the lodge being one of the reasons we didn’t make Quality Lodge. bleh.
Well, that’s all for now, next update will be… I’m not sure, it could be tomorrow, it might be three weeks from now. It all depends on what’s going on.
